Capital Chapter News

Capital eng.jpg

After a busy start to the 2015-2016 program year, the Capital Chapter kicked off the New Year with an e-survey to its members, as well as CFOs, CAEs and key stakeholders, to gain valuable input on the future of FMI Capital Chapter PD Days.

FMI-CC had an excellent turnout to its January 21st PD Day on Investment and Management of Project: Practices related to Costing Initiatives. This was the fifth year the Chapter has profiled Treasury Board policies on the management of projects, their costing implications and the impact on the investment plan. The keynote speech by Infrastructure Canada's Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, Jean-François Tremblay, was well received. DM Tremblay focused on the importance of data collection in undertaking any new costing.

CPA spokesperson Richard Monk gave a presentation on the CPA Awards of Excellence in Public Sector Financial Management program which recognizes outstanding financial management in the federal public sector. These awards shine a much-deserved spotlight on outstanding leaders that will be honoured on May 1st at the Fairmont Chateau Laurier in Ottawa.

THE ASPIRING LEADERS NETWORK (ALN) - CAPITAL CHAPTER
ALN-CC members Jennifer Chau, Jean-Michel Boudreault-Labbé and Hassan Souleiman represented the Capital Chapter at a successful Net Night at Carleton University on February 11th. The networking event featured many Carleton students from all faculties and potential employers. It gave ALN-CC the opportunity to inform students about what the ALN is and what it does, share career and personal stories on how the FMI/ALN is beneficial for career development, and encourage students to attend Capital Chapter PD Days and events or to be a volunteer.

In addition, the ALN-CC has been invited to attend a student networking event at the University of Ottawa in early April 2016. ALN-CC members Jean-Michel Boudreault-Labbé and Maria Shao will be providing an information session on FMI-CC and ALN-CC, its various activities and volunteer opportunities. The objective of this event, organized by the Academy of Internal Auditors, is to provide students with information on career development opportunities. The ALN-CC is planning to share their presentation online for students to view.

JOINT IIA/FMI-CC PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT BREAKFAST
There was an excellent turnout to the joint IIA/FMI-CC Professional Development Breakfast event on Career Management - Transition between CAE to Senior Financial Executives/CFO on February 3rd at the Sheraton Hotel. Overall, the morning focused on the importance of encouraging internal audit and financial professionals to consider opportunities in which they could gain additional experience outside their respective functions. A special thank you goes out to our presenters including Carol Najm, Assistant Deputy Minister (Finance Branch), Chief Financial Officer, Environment Canada; and Julie Charron, Acting Chief Financial Officer, Public Services and Procurement Canada.
