Doug Lloyd, CMC, PMP, CMA is the Financial System Authority for the government of Canada. He is responsible for developing and setting financial business processes and common financial information standards for the government, as well as establishing policies on the stewardship of the financial management system (both automated and manual). His team is also responsible for a community building and capacity development regime for finance personnel in the government, as well as operating a centre of expertise for aspects of finance.


Prior to this, Doug was on exchange from the private sector and was responsible for managing and troubleshooting major crown projects for Treasury Board Secretariat, Public Works and Government Services Canada and Human Resources Development Canada. He won two distinction awards from the industry for project management at this time.

From 1983, when he left the military, until 2005, Doug was the President and CEO of a private sector niche management consulting company offering strategic advice, major crown project management, and international consulting. The company enjoyed steady year-over-year growth in revenues, profits and employees.

Doug is the chair of the board of the National Institute on Biomass, Renewable and Clean Technologies, and was until recently both a trustee on the Ottawa Board of Education, and the President and Chair of the Board of the provincial crown agency responsible for education transportation in the national capital/eastern Ontario region.

Doug has an MBA from the University of Ottawa, holds a CMA, a CMC and a PMP designation. He is in process of completing a PhD in Public Administration specializing in building high performing teams using intergenerational techniques. A subject he lectures on frequently to universities, colleges and professional associations.

Lorenzo Pederzani, CFP, FCSI, FMA is an Investment Advisor, Certified Financial Planner with Dundee Wealth Inc. With over 10 years of financial service experience, Lorenzo has built a planning practice by sharing his knowledge and passion for financial education with his clients.

Seven years ago, Lorenzo and his colleague created a series of courses designed to improve financial literacy by bringing financial education into the workplace. Now in its eighth year, Lorenzo is proud that this program has delivered more than 200 courses in 65 companies across the Lower Mainland.

Prior to becoming a financial planner, Lorenzo gained valuable experience growing and restructuring a $7 million company in his role as VP Finance & Operation.

Lorenzo then moved on to accept a position in New York City with Mellon Investor Services as a Business Analyst in the financial services division of this prestigious US bank. After living through the events of September 11th, Lorenzo returned to his native Vancouver to launch a private wealth management practice.

Andrew Chowne, BA is an Investment Advisor with Dundee Wealth Inc. Andrew deeply values the connection he shares with his clients. Working with his clients to help them determine their financial and life goals, which then become the basis for creating and maintaining an effective financial plan is what really excites him about his line of work.

After graduating from UBC, Andrew worked with a variety of small and large local businesses before deciding to turn his interest in financial planning into a career. He joined Great Pacific Management, which ultimately became part of DundeeWealth, in 1994.

Andrew has completed the Professional Financial Planning Course through CSI (Canadian Securities Institute) and is a Level 2 licensed Life Insurance Agent with Dundee Insurance Agengy Ltd.

Juliet Woodfield,CA is the Senior Director of the Office of Controller General at the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat. She has recently moved over from the Office of the Auditor General (OAG) of Canada. She brings many years of experience as a financial manager and auditor. Most recently, her roles and responsibilities at the OAG included the oversight of the financial audits of several federal government departments, agencies, and crown corporations. In addition, she has been a member of the Professional Practices Group at the OAG, having team lead responsibility for the transition of the OAG to the new Canadian Auditing Standards (CAS). She has participated in the community development of the over 500 financial and provincial legislative auditors across Canada by developing and providing training on the conversions to CAS and on the transition to the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).

Juliet has held various financial controllership roles including the Deputy Financial Officer of the NATO Security Investment Program in Brussels, Belgium; Director of Finance for a mid-sized hospital in Cold Lake, Alberta; and Controller for an oil and gas company in Calgary.

Juliet grew up in Calgary, Alberta and obtained her Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Calgary and her Chartered Accountant designation from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta. She very much enjoys living in the NCR with her family.

Jean Laporte is currently the Chief Operating Officer at the Transportation Safety Board of Canada, thefederal government agency which conducts independent accident investigations into selectedaccidents and incidents in the marine, rail, air and pipeline modes of transportation. Prior to beingappointed as COO, Jean worked a total of 25 years in a variety of positions with progressively moreresponsibilities, including the Chief Financial Officer position which he occupied for a period of 9years. Jean has also worked at the Treasury Board Secretariat and at Revenue Canada – Customsand Excise. He is a graduate of the University of Ottawa and a Certified General Accountant.


In 2007, Jean was awarded a Fellowship by the CGA Association of Canada for his contribution to theaccounting profession.Jean is a member of the Financial Management Institute of Canada and served as its NationalPresident. He is also actively involved in the CGA Association of Ontario. He is a frequent speakerin various professional development forums and offers a unique and candid presentation stylesomewhat uncommon for a senior public service official.


Jean discussed current initiatives facing the Financial Management Community in Ottawa.

What’s New in Ottawa …

 

Rick McMahon, currently works for BC Assessment in Victoria and is DeputyAssessor of the Capital Region. In addition to managing the residential and  institutional property portfolio in Greater Victoria, over the past two years Rick hasbeen spearheading Corporate green initiatives to coincide with the Province of BritishColumbia’s Climate Action plan to reduce green house emissions and be Carbon Neutral. 

Rick provided us with an overview of the Property Assessment system in British Columbia. Rick highlighted the role BC Assessment plays within the real property taxation system in British Columbia. A brief comparison to other taxing jurisdictions was also presented.

Emergencies and disasters can happen with little or no warning. Being prepared could save your life or the lives of others and significantly improve your quality of living in the aftermath. DJ Lawrence will join us to teach you to be prepared for any type of emergency or disaster you may be faced with. You will learn personal and family preparedness, how to develop a family emergency plan, how to perform a “home hazard hunt”, what infrastructure will still be operational, and how to reconnect with family after an event.

 

Cambodian Relief Work

 

A Government of Canada employee working in Cambodia doing relief work decided she could do more without the bureaucracy, fancy travel, hotels and so on. She started the Tabitha Foundation, (www.tabitha.ca) and recruits team from all over the world. The teams fundraise to purchase building materials, pay their own way to Cambodia, and work with the residents to build homes and wells. DJ Lawrence joined one of these teams in November 2008, and has been working to help a team going in November 2010. He is willing to share stories about his trip to Cambodia where he joined a group of VPD, family and friends to build houses and assist with humanitarian efforts. If you've ever been interested in doing or supporting developing nations relief work, or want to learn a bit about this fascinating part of the world, this session is not to be missed. Please note that some of the story and photo's are not for the faint of heart.

Becoming a Tri-Athlete in Leadership
