GLOBAL TRANSPORTATION HUB

SPEAKER:
MR. WAYNE ELHARD, MLA
Chairman of the Board
Global Transportation Hub Authority

Thursday, January 20, 2011
Lombardy Room, Delta Regina
1919 Saskatchewan Drive, Regina SK

The Global Transportation Hub Authority (GTHA) and its leadership will provide Saskatchewan exporters and importers with state-of-the-art links to national, North American and global markets.   It will create new jobs and investment opportunities and improve traffic flow and safety throughout the Regina region.  It provides a new vehicle for sharing the benefits of Saskatchewan's booming economy.

The GTHA project, involving a partnership of the Government of Saskatchewan, the Government of Canada, the City of Regina and CP Rail, is joined by an anchor tenant – Canadian Logistics Services (serving the Loblaw’s group of stores).  It encompasses the relocation of the current CP inter-modal facility from downtown Regina to a site west of the city and includes the building of the necessary infrastructure to access the new site.  It involved the building of a new overpass at the intersection of Highway 1 and Lewvan Drive and a connecting road between Highway 1 and Highway 11.

An inter-modal transportation facility is used to efficiently transfer shipping containers between trains and trucks. These containers hold the freight, which does not have to be actually handled when changing between modes. This method improves security and reduces damage and loss, while allowing cargo to be shipped faster and more efficiently.

The vision of the GTHA provides for a world class facility.   It will be a major transportation and logistics hub that is private-sector driven and will effectively and efficiently distribute goods regionally, nationally and internationally, providing economic benefits to Saskatchewan people and businesses.

Mr. Wayne Elhard, MLA for Cypress Hills was appointed Chairman of the Board of the Global Transportation Hub Authority in June 2009.   He will explain what the GTH is and its scope of operations and share its impact on the economic future of Saskatchewan.
