What’s New
Upcoming FMI Ontario Events
The schedule for 2010/11 FMI Ontario Professional Development (PD) date and topic are as follows:
Wednesday, Feb 23, 2011 – Budget, Cash Flow and Forecasting
PD Description: A hands-on workshop for participants to better understand and apply the concepts of properly prepared budgets, cash-flow statements and forecasts. Learn more about these three essential reporting and measurement systems to help your cost centres achieve their fiscal objectives.
Wednesday, May 18, 2011 – Accountability and Transparency
PD Description: Elected public officials are accountable to voters, and public sector managers are accountable to the elected public officials. Accountability comes from both external controls (such as codes of ethics, legal mandates and laws) and internal controls (e.g. personal norms of behaviour) and sometimes these controls clash. Recent events confirm that we continue to strive for balance. Can we achieve this balance with regular audits, the scrutiny of the public, and the analysis from media watchdogs? Come and learn more about this fascinating topic.

Regional Update
BY: Gloria Caulley
In the Regional Spot Light – Sault Ste Marie
In our spotlight for this publication is the beautiful lake country of Sault Ste Marie is Northern Ontario. Staff participating at this location come from various government organizations including Ministry of Natural Resources, Ministry of Northern Development, Mines and Forestry, and the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund.
The group usually meets in a boardroom of the local Quality Inn. They have opted for an offsite location to not only provide more space, but also enjoy enhanced technical facilities and a better opportunity to focus on the webcast, mingle and network.
Over the past four years, Christine Jussila, Controller, Aviation, Fire and Emergency Services, and a 23-year veteran of the Ministry of Natural Resources, has been generously volunteering her time as webcast host. Christine and her group have been working to increase interest in the webcast by notifying staff in neighbouring government organizations (federal and provincial) of upcoming events and encouraging all financial staff, including administrative and clerical staff responsible for their unit’s financials, to participate. The webcasts have been attracting between 5-10 participants at each event and they have enjoyed interesting contributions in their discussions with members with varied backgrounds.
|
The participants at the May 26th, 2010 event are: from left to right: Janet Brown, Patricia Bolduc, Lorilee Matheson, Melissa Corriveau, Susan Richichi. Unfortunately, Christine was unable to attend this event. Patricia Bolduc (second from left) hosted this event.
If you are interested in attending or hosting a regional webcast in your location, please contact Gloria for further information at 905-704-2729 or you mail email her at Gloria.Caulley@ontario.ca.
