April 28, 2011 PD Luncheon Session - Jennifer Hibbert, CMA, CFE, DIFA, Director of Financial Services at Manitoba Culture, Heritage & Tourism and Healthy Living, Youth & Seniors, speaking about "Behind the Scenes of a Forensic Accounting Investigation."

  • This lunch session looked inside the world of forensic accounting. Through real case examples, what is involved in conducting a forensic engagement from gathering information to testifying as an expert witness were explored. The session also included a discussion of the different tools and techniques that can be used to conduct the investigation and the various parties that are involved in successfully completing the investigation.

February 17, 2011 PD Morning or Afternoon Sessions - Doug Lloyd, Executive Director, Financial Systems Authority, Office of the Comptroller General, speaking on the financial management transformation initiative presently underway at the Office of the Comptroller General.

  • overview of the duties and purpose of the Financial System Authority;
  • various policies, directives and initiatives which collectively make up the transformation effort;
  • the policy and directive on the stewardship of financial management systems;
  • the financial interoperability and stewardship initiative;
  • how these are related to the renewal of our financial management business processes, creation of standard and common system configurations, and creation of common financial information in the government of Canada;
  • how this is related to accountability;
  • question and answer period.

October 20, 2010 PD Morning Session - Richard Olfert, FCA, CMC, partner with Deloitte, speaking on the topic "Moving Beyond Bookkeeping:  Building Finance Competence in Today’s Government".

This presentation outlined the role that finance can play in transforming government. Finance people need to contribute beyond the basic bookkeeping that has been traditionally expected of them in order to manage the financial pressures and challenges of government policy decisions. What kind of contributions are these?  What skills need to be developed?  What is the potential for impact by finance personnel on government policy?

June 2, 2010 PD Morning Session - Barb Dryden, Assistant Deputy Minister at Treasury Board Secretariat, Province of Manitoba (responsible for developing fiscal strategy and planning options for the Government of Manitoba) speaking on the topic "Consolidated Budgeting – The Manitoba Experience".

This presentation outlined the steps that led to the adoption of a summary budget in Manitoba, the issues and challenges of implementation, the introduction of an annual financial management strategy and the impact on financial reporting.

April 14, 2010 PD Morning Session - Monique Clairoux, Senior Director, Internal Audit Capacity Building and Community Development at the Office of the Comptroller General, speaking on the topic "Becoming a Tri-athlete in Leadership."

Participants learned how to leverage their speciality sport and build upon three key leadership aspects: In-depth departmental strategic knowledge, Technical skills, and Leadership skills.
